Becoming Kaz Smith | Short Documentary
Written, shot, edited and directed by Owen Alexander Johnson
Kaz was first featured in a special edition of The Rocky Mountain Collegian in November of 2020. I wanted to meet Kaz and do my best to not only bring his story to another platform, but also get to know him better. More on Kaz and TSF here.
Best Outcomes | Student Recruitment Presentation Film
Role: Editor
Created using only existing, previously-shot media, this recruitment film is intended to act as the hard-hitting closer for visiting recruiters at schools around the country to showcase the strengths of their institution and inspire a generation of trades workers.
The Bitter Sweet Archive | Trans-generational Archival Personal Documentary Film Project
Social Media Trailer
Role: Editor
With some select moments from the original film and a key music track, I cut together a short social media trailer to share with friends and family prior to sharing the entire piece.
Archival Personal Documentary Film
Role: Post-producer, Editor
In the midst of the 20th century, and throughout much of my grandad Dan Johnson’s life, my great-grandad Everett Johnson wielded a handheld 8mm film camera loaded with color film. He captured stunning video of his world and family and daily life. Scanned sometime in the naughts, the video made its way to me in 2017, where I enlisted Grandad Dan to watch it with me as I recorded his narration where he provided context, character identification, and thoughtful insight, all in his soft baritone. Grandad Dan passed away in 2020, so while he did not get to see this version of the film, his surviving brother and all of my extended family got to enjoy it and remember him and Everett by. I like to think of this project as a trans-generational collaboration in filmmaking.
